Continue reading, and explore a bit more about Rann Utsav-The Tent City for it is rightly said,
If you haven’t seen Kutch
Perhaps you haven’t seen much.
Once which was a vast and arid white patch of land, today hosts lovers of tourism and culture from across the globe. The Greater Rann of Kutch is a vast marshland, a part of the Thar Desert in Kutch and is popularly known as the White Rann of Kutch. This is also among the world’s largest salt deserts covering an area of around 7,500 sq. km.
The earthquake of 2001 left Bhuj, Gujarat devastated, claiming the lives of over 20,000 people, injuring over 1.67 lac people, and destroying over 3.4 lac buildings, including huts and commercial spaces around The White Rann.
Before being famous for the White Rann, Kutch, the city had to be rebuilt from the scratch. The Gujarat Government, under the able leadership of the then Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi, developed an exclusive space called the Tent City of the White Rann and named it Rann Utsav. This was an extraordinary venture as no one would have imagined that this vast and barren desert could become one of India’s most sought-after tourism destinations. It was an important project also because apart from empowering local tourism, it uplifted the local communities of Kutch, who got an opportunity to make a living by selling handicraft items, artifacts, ethnic apparel, etc.
What is Rann Utsav?
White Rann, also known as Safed Rann is a geographical marvel spread across 7,505 sq miles in the Thar Desert. It is a salt marsh with white sands across its horizon. This marshy Kutch Rann landscape is transformed into a thriving tourist destination that attracts millions of people year after year from across the nation as well as the globe.
The White Deserts are also called as salt pans which are formed by the natural phenomenon of evaporation. Every water body evaporates upto a certain extent but the difference in these deserts is the speed of evaporation. White deserts are formed when water collected in the deserts dries up faster than their replenishment. This leaves a vast sheet of salt on the desert, forming a large seamless white patch. The White Rann is formed only for a few months, of the year mainly from October to February and remains sea backwater around the year.
Gujarat does have a considerable number of tourism destinations like the famous Somnath temple, Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram, Gir National Park and now the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity – but the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi saw a future in this barren piece of land. He thus created this mega-festival and named it Rann Utsav.
The ‘Rann’ means Salty Marshland and ‘Utsav’ means festival. So, ‘Rann Utsav’ means a celebration of the salty marshland formation and the stunning experience it offers to its visitors of Rann Mahotsav.
This celebration is accentuated by Rann Utsav Tent City, a city in its literal sense, wherein the entire city is created during Rann Kutch Festival and dismantled every year including the entire infrastructure, using over 15,000 Tons of materials to build the Tent City.
Rann Utsav packages vary according to the facilities opted for. Since its inception, the Rann Utsav booking has multiplied exponentially, attracting over 5,00,000+ visitors from 20+ countries, 350 tents across 9 clusters and spread in an area of 5,00,000 sq. mt. Rann Utsav bookings are simple and hassle-free. Just go through the official website, get an idea of the entire festival, and book online. Another option is to call on the official toll-free number 1800 270 2700.

When is Rann Utsav organised?
One of the main, in fact a primary attraction of Rann Utsav-The Tent City is the White Rann experience. It is formed after the rains in monsoons, when the water is dried up considerably fast, leaving behind a vastland of salt. The moist marshland is converted into a vast hard salt pan. This happens mostly in October soon after the monsoons. According to this natural happening, Rann Utsav is organised in between October to February. This year it is scheduled from 26th October, 2022 to 20th February 2023.
Another factor that makes this the best period to make Rann Utsav happen is winter. The cold weather makes up for a fantastic experience. The cool weather and the warmth you receive while with your family or friends is indeed indescribable. The moderately foggy atmosphere adds to the scenic beauty of sites to visit. You can imagine if not feel the real vibes of the Full Moon and Dark Moon experience in a cold wintery night. The bonfire experience adds to the list of unforgettable moments. The timing fits perfect as per the number of holidays and festivities beginning with Diwali season in October-November to Christmas and New Year in December and January. Uttarayan is one more great time to be at the Rann. It is a suitable spot for couples on Valentines’ Day in February, after which Winter season starts fading away. Rann, naturally being a desert is hot during summers which is a relief since the festival is hosted in the winter.
