Rann Utsav Sustainability Philosophy

Rann Utsav is more than a celebration of culture and heritage; it is a commitment to preserving the pristine beauty of the Great Rann of Kutch for generations to come. As one of the largest glamping events in the world, with 500 tents built among a delicate ecosystem, Rann Utsav holds sustainability at the heart of its operations. Our philosophy revolves around the idea of celebrating responsibly—ensuring that our actions today contribute to a greener, more inclusive tomorrow. Our sustainability efforts are deeply intertwined with the event’s vision:

To honour the cultural richness of Kutch while fostering environmental stewardship and community empowerment. Every initiative, from reducing waste and conserving resources to supporting local artisans and adopting renewable energy, is guided by global best practices and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Initiatives

Eco-Friendly Tented Accommodation

Our tents are handmade by skilled artisans using natural dyes and traditional designs. They are made from durable, biodegradable materials, ensuring they last long while being kind to the environment. Once used, these tents are repurposed for other projects, reducing waste and extending their life.

The 5Rs of Sustainability

We use recycled and repurposed materials for decorations, structures, and walls. By blending traditional techniques with modern ideas, we reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Eliminating single-use Plastic

  • We aim to stop using single-use plastics by 2026 and have onsite plastic bottle crusher machines to recycle plastic.
  • We organize monthly clean-up drives to keep the surroundings clean and green.

Managing Food Waste

We manage food waste in a few important ways:

  • Composting: All leftover food is turned into compost using special machines, enriching the soil and reducing landfill waste.
  • Awareness: We actively spread awareness to encourage guests and staff to reduce food waste.
  • Zero Food Waste Goal: Our aim is to achieve zero food waste, ensuring every effort is made to avoid wastage and to create a sustainable cycle.

Eco-Friendly Travel Options

  • We use electric carts for transport within the festival area, cutting down on emissions.
  • Public transportation is included in guest packages to promote shared travel.
  • Most of our guests travel by train, and we provide group pick-up and drop-off services to lower emissions further.

Supporting Local Communities

  1. Local Art and Craft Stalls:
We provide space for local artisans to sell traditional crafts like embroidery, pottery, and jewelry, supporting their livelihoods and preserving local traditions.

  2. Workshops on Traditional Crafts:
Guests can learn skills like embroidery, pottery, and weaving from local artisans, helping them earn an income while sharing their knowledge.

  3. Cultural Events and Performances:
We host folk dances, music, and cultural programs to celebrate Kutch’s rich heritage, giving local artists a platform to shine.
Through these efforts, we’re creating a festival that’s eco-friendly, culturally rich, and socially responsible.
